Reset and Recharge - Starting The Semester Strong With ADHD

It’s a new year, and for many high school and college students, that brings a new semester.

New semesters feel like a chance for a fresh start.

A reset and recharge time.

If last semester didn’t go the way you wanted it to, let’s chat about how this coming semester can have more success!

Last Semester Reflections

Before we jump into planning for the new semester, take a few minutes to consider your last semester and what did and did not work.

What routines helped you stay on track?

What habits did you develop, good or bad?

Where did your biggest struggles show up?

What goals did I achieve?

What do I want to take with me into next semester and what do I want to leave in the last one.

What did I learn from tough times, challenges, or failures?

Setting Your Goals

After you reflect on last semester, you can start to set the goals for this coming semester. Consider academic goals, as well as personal goals. Set goals that are clear and manageable.

There are several acronyms used for setting goals.  Which one you use doesn’t matter as much as making sure that the goals you set feel good to you, are realistic for you, and can celebrate progress along the way.

Can you accomplish this goal in the time allotted? Does the goal align with who you are as a person? Be clear on the purpose of the goal and you are more likely to stick to it.

ADHD Routines That Work For You

ADHD folks tend to hate routines and struggle with them – AND we really do need routines that work for us to function on a daily basis. Following consistent routines helps us to manage transitions and develop better habits.

For example – having a morning routine that works for you will save you time and stress in the morning. Planning your day before bed may help you stay on track.

Just find what works for you and be willing to experiment to find it. Not all routines work for all folks – try something, see what works and what doesn’t, and try again.

Find the Tools  That Work For You

There are so many ADHD friendly tools out there nowadays. Try them.

Here are just a FEW of the things that might work for you.

  • ADHD friendly planners (physical or digital)
  • Color Coded Folders, notebooks, or post it notes
  • Apps like Google Calendar or other digital calendars with reminders
  • .Fidget Toys
  • Pomodoro Timers
  • Accountability Buddy/Co-working

Be willing to try something, take what works and try something else. Find something new. And remember that ADHD folks like novelty – so something that works one week might not work the next – that’s okay, just roll with it and find what works this week.
